Basic Firearm Introduction Class for Youth
This class focuses on providing youth, 6-7 years old & up with information on the danger, safe-guards, and safe-handling of a firearm. The National Rifle Association's (NRA) "Eddie Eagle" principles are used. Parents play a key role in developing safe practices and are ultimately responsible for the behavior and safety of their children. Because isolated lessons by us or other NRA instructors, as well as the concepts we present, can be quickly forgotten, repetition (i.e., reminders) by parents will help children remember standard safety procedures. Therefore, we ask that a parent or responsible guardian be present during our instruction. This specific session by New Mexico Guns will include instruction and actual live firing of a handgun by the child and encompasses:
Recognizing a possible handgun.
What steps the child should take if they see a handgun when their parent or responsible adult is not present (such as at a friend's home, on the street, at school, or elsewhere).
Observing the features and use of handguns by others.
Holding a handgun in a safe manner.
Loading and unloading a handgun.
Firing a handgun with live ammunition at both stationary and moving targets.
Cleaning a handgun. We do not recommend or practice the dismantling of the firearm for cleaning for this age group. We have the student simply clean the bore and exterior of the handgun.
Proper securing and storing a handgun for safety and security.
Certificates and NRA qualification badges are presented to the student upon completion of the course.
Needed equipment would include:
Handguns. Either semi-automatic or revolver is fine. We recommend handguns chambered for the 22 caliber, especially for the younger ones. Higher calibers can be used at the parents option and student's ability..
Ammunition. We recommend major manufacturer ammunition, such as Remington, Winchester, Federal, etc. No reloads or tracer ammunition.
Holsters designed to securely hold the firearm for when the student is not at the firing line and shooting.
Eye & ear protection.
Cleaning equipment (optional).
etc.
We use a semi-private area of the firing range, which allows the student(s) to be distanced, both visually and protectively, from other shooters that may be using other parts of the public range.
Special class schedules (e.g., days, evenings, weekends, etc.) can be accommodated if you have a group of four or more, or if private instruction is desired.
